Radar Technology (334E)
The Radar Technology Group identifies, develops and evaluates a broad range of advanced subsystems, components and technologies that support a portfolio of future radar instruments and radar remote sensing missions. A balance of homegrown and industry-developed technology is used to increase sensor capabilities and decrease mass, cost and risk for radar missions.
Key products include:
- Ground and airborne demonstration radar systems
- Radio frequency (RF) electronics including up/downconverters and transmit/receive (T/R) modules
- Digital electronics subsystems including control and data handling systems, real-time radar processors, digital downconverters and digital beamformers
- Phased-array antennas and associated components
Radar projects that the Radar Technology group is currently supporting include:
- UAVSAR (Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar – airborne L-band interferometric polarimetric SAR for deformation and vegetation studies)
- MSL TDS (Mars Science Laboratory Terminal Descent Sensor – Mars Ka-band landing radar altimeter/velocimeter)
- Research & Technology Development topics and initiatives
- GLISTIN Instrument Incubator project (Glacier and Land Ice Surface Topography Interferometer – a single-pass, single platform interferometric synthetic aperture radar [InSAR])
- International Polar Year (IPY) research tasks to advance radar technology
