Biography:
Ziad Haddad is the supervisor of the Radar Science group (334H) in the Radar Science & Engineering Section. At JPL, he designed, implemented and validated the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission's combined radar-radiometer instantaneous precipitation profiling algorithm. He also designed the data compression algorithm for the Cassini mission's synthetic aperture radar, as well as the mosaic filtering algorithm to minimize the uncertainty in the topographic heights estimated by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. Ziad also assisted the Phoenix landing radar Tiger Team in developing a real-time processing procedure adapted to the constraints of that radar, and he designed a novel data filtering application to estimate the parameters that characterize the tidal motion on Europa from future interferometric radar measurements. In addition to his work at JPL, Ziad is currently a visiting researcher at the UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering.
Education:
PhD in mathematics (1983) from MIT
BA in mathematics and computer science (1980) from UCLA
Research Interests:
Ziad''s current research activities include the development of stochastic algorithms for the estimation of precipitation and cloud parameters from remote sensing data, including Bayesian approaches to train passive microwave radiometers (using nearly simultaneous radar measurements) to retrieve the vertical distribution of condensed water.
Professional Experience:
Before joining JPL in 1991, Ziad taught mathematics at MIT, analyzed radar detection and tracking problems at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, modeled wave propagation in complex media at AT&T/Bell Laboratories, and taught mathematics at the University of California at San Diego while pursuing research in nonlinear filtering and estimation.
